Key findings of the study are as follows:

  1. Mobile is driving growth of major global social platforms usage.
  2. Mobile and tablet usage is beginning to heavily impact social media usage with mobile having the biggest effect on Twitter which is used by 94 million active Twitter to share photos compared to 140 million on PC.
  3. Facebook remains the most actively used social network. Nearly 50% of all the world’s internet users are active users of Facebook.
  4. Google+ is catching up to Facebook.
  5. Uploading photos is the most popular activity on Facebook
  6. Social network usage by older users is increasing. The increase in usage by the 55 to 64 year olds is greater than 100% for Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
  7. LinkedIn has become more popular among the mature demographic of internet users and network of choice for most knowledge workers and professionals.
  8. Pinterest and Tumblr are currently the fastest growing global social media with growth rates of 88% and 74% respectively over the last 12 months.
  9. Emerging markets remain more active on social networks compared with developed countries. In Q2 2013 South Africa had the highest proportion of active Facebook users: 68%. mobile-phone-internet
  10. Google+ has the highest visits per month, more than any other social platform on a PC. This number is expected to rise, with the adoption of G+ in emerging markets.
