Labone Express provides below, a brief profile of the administrative area of the new La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly.

Background

The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly was created by the government in 2012. The whole, area a few years before the creation of the Assembly, used to be the La Sub Metro, part of Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

Further back in the 1990s, when the AMA was created, the area existed as part of Kpeshie, one of six Sub Metros of the Assembly. In 2003 by a legislative instrument, Kpeshie was divided into three: La, Teshie, and Nungua Sub Metros. Then, in 2007, Teshie and Nungua Sub Metros were joined to create Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly. Since then, La remained a Sub Metro of AMA until 2012.

Geography

La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Area (Assembly) is bounded in the north by Ayawaso-East and Ayawaso-West Sub Metros of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, AMA; in the east by Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Area (Assembly), LEKMA; in the south by the Atlantic Ocean and in the west by Osu-Klottey Sub Metro, also of AMA.

  2. Adobetor
  3. Ako Adjei
  4. Burma Camp
  5. Cantonments
  6. Labone

The Assembly is made up of 15 members: 10 elected, each representing one electoral area. The rest, 5 are appointed by the government, (government appointees is the popular term for them).

Economic

La Dade-Kotopon is perhaps, the richest District Assembly in Ghana now. It can raise huge funds annually from property rates alone. It is the rating authority over some of the most luxurious localities in Ghana. Cantonments and North Labone which were zoned super first class localities when they formed part of AMA, are now part of the new Municipal Area. In addition to that, the Accra Airport City, a modern business enclave, with multi-storey, high value commercial property of hotels, offices and shopping malls, is within the boundary of La Dade-Kotopon. These areas attract high property rate charges annually.

Similarly some businesses that pay thousands of Ghana cedis in annual business permit fees are located here. For example, there are five and four star hotels, airlines, banks and insurance companies in the district. They should contribute very well to the annual revenue. The La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly is, likely, to continue with these main revenue schemes it has inherited from AMA.

Social

This Municipal Area with luxurious localities is, also, home for the high class and stylish in society. You can find very beautiful architecture here. There are posh coffee shops and fashion shops and galleries. It has the best bars and nightclubs like Reggie’s Office, Jokers and Celsbridge. The best preparatory schools: Ghana International School, Morning Star and Soul Clinic are located here. It has La Township, home to Ga people: a relatively peaceful people of rich heritage, and traditional authority in La Dade-Kotopon.

I hope you find this brief profile helpful.
